Why generic fitness apps fail serious lifters
I've tried most of them. They're fine for casual users. They're not built for someone running a structured hypertrophy block, and here's exactly where they fall apart.
I've tried most of the popular ones. MyFitnessPal, Strong, Hevy, Strava, Apple Fitness, Fitbod, a few others. They're fine for the average user. They're not built for someone running a structured hypertrophy block, and the gap shows up fast.
This isn't a hit piece. These apps serve their audience well. But "I want to track my workouts" and "I want a system that supports a year of structured progression" are different problems, and the apps in this category mostly solve the first one.
1. No real concept of RIR or RPE
Reps and weight aren't enough. A set at RPE 7 is a different stimulus from RPE 10, and any program that takes hypertrophy seriously tracks proximity to failure. Most apps don't have a field for it, or they bolt it on as a free-text note that nothing downstream can use. If your training is intensity-modulated and your app can't model intensity, the app is logging the wrong variable.
2. Progressive overload tracking is shallow
"You lifted more than last time" is not progressive overload tracking. Real overload analysis accounts for total volume (sets × reps × load), proximity to failure across the working set range, and the trend across multiple weeks of a block, not just last session versus this session. Most apps surface the single-session comparison and stop there.
3. Exercise variations are treated as unrelated lifts
If I'm rotating between pause squats and high-bar squats inside a block, the app sees two different lifts with no relationship. They are related. They're targeting overlapping musculature with different stimuli, and a serious system should know that and surface progression across the family, not just the literal lift.
4. Weak-point work is invisible
Generic apps love to surface your "big lifts": bench, squat, deadlift. They don't help you see whether you're actually growing your weak points. If you're a bodybuilder, weak-point work is the entire game. The lifts that move the most weight are usually the lifts that need the least attention. The app should help you see that, not bury it.
5. Nutrition lives in a separate universe
Tracking macros in one app and training in another means neither has the full picture. A maintenance phase, a cut, and a bulk all require different programming responses, and the training app doesn't know which one you're in. Your nutrition adherence context-switches the meaning of every other data point in the system, and most apps just ignore it.
6. Sets aren't sessions, sessions aren't blocks, blocks aren't years
Generic apps think in sets. They show you the set you just did, maybe the session you're in, maybe last week's session of the same lift. Serious training thinks in blocks: three to six weeks of intentional progression, then a deload, then a new block built on what the last one taught you. And serious training thinks in years: which weak points have actually moved, which haven't, what the trend looks like over four hypertrophy blocks in a row. The interface should reflect that timescale. Almost none of them do.
What serious lifters actually need
Programming that knows about phases. Logging that captures intensity, not just volume. Nutrition that's contextual to the phase. Variation-aware progression. Weak-point visibility. Progress views that operate on the timescale of months and years, not workouts.
That's what we're building into Colossus. Not because the generic apps are bad (they're well-built tools for the audience they chose), but because there's a gap between "fitness tracker" and "actual training system" that hasn't been filled well, and serious lifters deserve better software.
