How to price online coaching packages

A practical framework: find your cost floor, price the outcome, structure three tiers, and raise rates with proof. Free worksheet included.

Pricing is the highest-leverage decision in a coaching business, and the one most coaches make by copying whoever they trained under. Underpricing is the common failure: it caps income, attracts the least committed clients, and leaves no margin for the tools and time that good coaching costs.

This guide gives you a framework to price from first principles instead. The worksheet version, with the calculations laid out, is a free download at the end.

Start with your floor, not your rate

Your floor is the price below which a client costs you money. Estimate the hours a client takes per month, programming, check-in reviews, messaging, calls, multiply by the hourly rate your time needs to earn, then add a per-client share of your fixed costs: software, insurance, education, and payment fees.

Most coaches who run this calculation for the first time discover their current price is at or below the floor. That is the point of the exercise: everything above the floor is strategy, everything below it is a donation.

Price the outcome, not the hours

Clients do not buy hours of your attention; they buy a result they could not get alone. The more specific the transformation you sell, first powerlifting meet, post-partum return to training, a 12-week cut done safely, the less your price gets compared to generic monthly coaching.

Specificity is also the honest position: a coach with a defined niche genuinely delivers more value per hour to that niche than a generalist does.

Three tiers beat one price

A single price forces a yes-or-no decision. Three options move the question from 'is this worth it?' to 'which one fits me?'. A workable structure: a self-guided tier with programming and check-ins, a core 1:1 tier with weekly reviews and messaging, and a premium tier with calls and closer contact.

Set the premium tier first and make it genuinely premium; it anchors the middle tier, which is where most clients should land. If everyone buys the cheapest option, the middle tier is underpowered, not overpriced.

Account for fees before you set the number

Whatever platform you use, fees belong inside the price, not bolted on afterwards. On Colossus the platform fee is 2-6% depending on tier, and Paystack card processing (3.5% + R1 per charge) is passed through at cost and itemised on each payout, so the all-in cost of collecting R1,000 is known before you set the price.

Predictable fees make the floor calculation honest. Surprise deductions are how a profitable price quietly becomes an unprofitable one.

Raise prices with proof, not apology

The sequence that works: collect results, publish them as case studies and testimonials, raise the price for new clients first, and grandfather existing clients for a defined period. Structured incentives beat ad-hoc discounts; a referral program or a time-boxed promo code protects the price's integrity in a way that quiet negotiation never does.

Frequently asked questions

What do online coaches charge in South Africa?

Ranges vary so widely by niche, experience, and offer that an average would mislead. Price from your own cost floor and the outcome you deliver rather than from a market number; the worksheet walks through the calculation.

Should I offer discounts?

Prefer structure over ad-hoc discounting: a referral program rewards the behaviour you want, and a time-boxed promo code creates urgency without resetting price expectations. Both are built into Colossus checkout.

Monthly billing or upfront packages?

Recurring monthly billing gives the business a predictable base and lowers the entry barrier. Offer a modest incentive for longer commitments once a client has seen a result, not before.
